April 2015 – Summary

April started with the only air frost of the month (-0.4°C on the 1st) and although temperatures improved during the month, it never really felt very warm.

Cloud and brisk southerly winds prevailed early in the month keeping temperatures down bringing some showery conditions but also some sunny intervals.

High pressure then developed over most of the UK placing us in a northerly air stream. While this brought calmer conditions and almost cloudless skies, resulting in over 13 hours of sunshine on both the 17th and 18th, the winds had a keen edge. The pressure peaked on the 21st at 1037.86mb, the highest to be recorded here in the month of April.

Winds increased from the west on the 23rd bringing sleet, snow and hail, plunging us into more wintery conditions with the lowest apparent temperature to be recorded here in April of – 8.3°C on the 26th. Scattered clouds and some sunshine returned towards the end of the month, but the temperatures failed to improve.
