March 2015 – Summary

Of all the months, March has been the most consistent in that it has become increasingly wet and windy over the past 5 years, a trend that was continued in 2015.

Winds dominated the month peaking on the 9th with gusts of 69 mph and wind speeds of 48mph, resulting in a wind run of 706.1 miles for that day, all record highs for the month of March. The average wind speed for the month was 14.6 mph with a wind run of 10850.0 miles and there were 2 gale days making it the windiest March on record at this station.

It was also the wettest March recorded at this station with a total of 117.2mm of rain falling during the month, almost double the 5 year average.

Temperatures were around average but a wind chill of -6.7°C was recorded on 31st, a record low for the month of March.

February 2015 – Summary

It was a chill start to February with snow flurries and 3 air frosts in the first 4 days with a high of only 2.8°C on the 3rd. Temperatures began to rise slowly as high pressure pushed its way in from the south resulting in the highest pressure (1043.65mb) recorded here in February on the 7th.

Dull and overcast conditions soon developed with some particularly heavy cloud during which time no sunshine was recorded for 5 days between the 9th – 13th , a new station record.
