August 2014 – Summary

It was unsurprising to find that August was the windiest recorded here at Askernish with two hurricanes, Bertha and Cristobel exerting  their influence during the month. While we in the islands escaped lightly compared to the South of England (Bertha) and then Iceland and The Faeroes (Cristobel), the 2 weather systems ensured that it was the windiest August on record with gusts of 50mph, a wind speed of 36mph and a daily wind run of 514.6 miles, all occurring on the 17th and all record highs for the month of August. The wind run for the month was 7229.9 miles

These winds also accounted for the lowest ever apparent temperature, that of 0.6’C to be measured in August on the 17th. While the weather improved towards the end of the month when there were long sunny days, the clear skies during the nights resulted in the lowest ever temperature to be recorded in August which occurred on the 24th when the temperatures dropped to 6.0’C
